THEORY TEST

Before you can book your practical driving test you must have passed the theory test. This test is a combination of multi choice questions and a 'hazard perception' section. The test is run by Pearsons on behalf of the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) at a variety of town and city centre locations across the country. You can book by telephone, post or on-line and it normally takes around 2 - 3 weeks for a test date to become available.  If you click here we will take you to the Online Theory Booking Site.

The multiple choice part of the test requires you to answer 50 questions spread over a range of driving subjects and you must achieve at least 40 correct answers. It is possible to answer 40 questions correctly and still fail however if you show a significant lack of knowledge in one or more areas of the test questions - perhaps your knowledge of road signs for example.

The hazard perception part of your test follows on immediately, though you can choose to wait a few minutes after your multiple choice questions (you must stay seated at your test station). You will be shown an explanatory clip and then the test begins.

On the screen will be a video clip taken from a car that is driving down a road. These clips are somewhat worryingly real, not made up for the test - some people really do the things you will see. You are expected to press your mouse button (it doesn't matter which one and you do not have to point the mouse at the hazard, just click) every time you see a hazard. A hazard is anything that could make you speed up, slow down or change direction.

There are 14 clips and in 13 of them one of these hazards will 'develop' - it will become such that you would have to do something to avoid it. During one of the clips there will be two hazards that develop. Maybe you see a cyclist riding along on your side of the road - you should click for this, then the cyclist turns their head to look behind them - this is the developing hazard as it is very likely the cyclist will turn in front of you. It is these 'developing' hazards that you are trying to spot as quickly as possible. The sooner you spot and click, the more points you score. The highest you can score is 5 points, down to zero if you see the hazard far too late.
